Technology proposal: JPEG XL

codemonkeys on 2 September 2024, 8 months ago

Website: https://jpeg.org/jpegxl/

JPEG XL is a royalty-free raster-graphics file format that supports both lossy and lossless compression of ultra-high-resolution images. It supports alpha transparency, animated images, and embedded previews, and has support for wide color gamut and HDR. It offers significantly better image quality and compression ratios than legacy JPEG

JPEG XL is supported in Safari 17 and later, making it a great modern image format on the web for users of Apple devices.

Example site using .jxl image files extensively alongside WebP and AVIF courtesy of the HTML picture/source element: https://creativetouchrotherham.co.uk/

JPEG XL is also supported by Cloudinary: https://cloudinary.com/blog/cloudinary_supports_jpeg_xl
