Website technology information bookmarkletPosted by Sam Soltano on 14 April 2010 in NewsSummary: We provide a bookmarklet now, that enables you to see any website's technologies with just one mouse click. Bookmarklets have been around forever (in Internet time scale). They are tiny pieces of JavaScript code, that are able to perform some little task within a web browser. Although they cannot compete with browser add-ons for more complex activities, they are unsurpassed in easy of use for the type of tasks they are able to accomplish.
We think that getting information about a website's technologies is a perfect use case for a bookmarklet. You can find it on our site info page. The bookmarklet can be installed in a second. Then, you just go on browsing the web as usual, and whenever you visit a site whose underlying technologies you want to know, you just click on the bookmarklet and you are brought to the appropriate W3Techs site info page.
When I said that a bookmarklet can be installed in a second, that is true only if you have done it before. How exactly it is done depends on your browser. You can always add it to your bookmarks/favorites like any other link. But that way, you might add the bookmarklet somewhere deep in your bookmark folders, where it is a little less convenient to use. What I find more convenient is to add it to your bookmarks toolbar / favorites bar. You might need to activate the toolbar via the view menu before. On Internet Explorer, you might need also to unlock the toolbars, if they are locked. Then you can simply drag the bookmarklet to the toolbar and that's it! Depending on your browser and your settings, you might still have to add the bookmarklet via the right mouse button, just make sure it is placed on the favorites bar/bookmarks toolbar.
We hope you find that new little helper useful. Share this page
