New indication of how recent technology versions of a site arePosted by Sam Soltano on 9 November 2010 in NewsSummary: Our website technology information page now shows how recent a technology version is by comparing it with the versions of all the other sites in our surveys.
We have always shown the version of the technologies used by websites. Now, we have added a little remark that shows how that compares to other sites using the same technology.
This is best explained by an example. If you look at our own technology information page, you will see that we currently use PHP version 5.2.13. You will now also see that 15% of all the other sites that use PHP, use a more recent version. That would be 5.2.14 or 5.3.x, some even claim to run version 6 already.
There is nothing wrong with using old versions of tools. As long as they do what you need them for, why bother changing. We can assume that the Japanese site Tok2 (an Alexa top 10.000 site) is quite satisfied with PHP 3 (released in the previous century), otherwise they would change. After all, sites such as PHP.net and Typo3.com run older versions of their own tools than one third of their user base. Let's not take this as an indication that they believe their latest versions are not ready for prime time yet.
While it might be alright to use outdated versions, we found that it would be helpful for webmasters to be aware of that fact, so that they can make an informed decision.
As always, we hope you find that little improvement of our website useful.
